Will OpenAI Start Calling Its Data Centers "AI Compute Campuses"?

Axios reports that OpenAI is lining up a policy and PR push for after the US midterm elections. At its center: what to call its data centers, and what to tell the communities that host them.

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to rebrand its data centers as “AI compute campuses.” Axios reported on November 1 (local time) that the idea is part of a policy and public relations push the company plans to roll out after the US midterm elections. Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, outlined the direction of the plan.

Why “campus”?

The renaming would apply to the data centers OpenAI is building in the United States. The focus is not on the AI services everyday users interact with, but on how the facilities that run AI are named and described.

This is not the first time the word “campus” has come up. In earlier official announcements, OpenAI already referred to its Stargate facilities as both data centers and campuses. Part of what is new here is deciding which of the terms already in use should take the lead.

What is Stargate?

Stargate is a project to build the computing facilities needed to train AI models and operate services. In a 2025 announcement, OpenAI said the newly formed Stargate Project company planned to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States over four years.

What has been promised to local communities?

Plans addressing relations with the areas hosting the facilities came earlier. In its official “Stargate Community” announcement, OpenAI said it would draw up a separate community plan for each campus. Rather than applying a single plan across all of its facilities, the company intends to build plans around the specific areas where each campus is located.

Electricity was also part of that announcement. OpenAI said it would cover the cost of the power its projects require directly, and proposed curtailing power use depending on local conditions.

What to watch next is whether the “AI compute campus” label is actually adopted, and what shape the accompanying policy push takes. How the already announced local plans and power cost commitments are carried out is also worth watching.
