OpenAI and Google Cloud announced a partnership on October 21 (local time) that brings OpenAI models and Codex to Google Cloud. Under the deal, Google Cloud customers will be able to use OpenAI models in Model Garden, the place within Google Cloud where customers pick and choose among a range of AI models. General availability for all customers is planned to begin within a few weeks of the announcement; for now, the companies are accepting sign-ups for access.

What changes here is the path companies take to use and buy OpenAI models. The models are used in Model Garden, and the purchasing happens through Google Cloud Marketplace. For a company already on Google Cloud, that means selecting OpenAI models inside the environment it already uses.

Can existing cloud budgets cover it?

Companies that have contracted to spend a set amount with Google Cloud can apply that amount toward purchasing OpenAI models. In other words, there is no need to secure a new budget line: the purchase can be paid for out of cloud spending that has already been committed.

Enterprise management features come along with it. OpenAI said customers can use Google Cloud’s access controls, centralized data management, and infrastructure together with OpenAI models. Customers can control who has access to the models and manage data centrally while using them.

Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner even after this partnership, a point OpenAI made explicit in the announcement. What the Google Cloud deal adds is the path of using models in Model Garden and buying them in Marketplace.

Where does Codex come in?

Codex was presented as a fit for software development and agentic work, meaning AI that handles tasks on its own. Beyond OpenAI models, the partnership also covers bringing these Codex capabilities into Model Garden. For Google Cloud customers looking to apply AI to development work, that adds one more route to tapping Codex.

The places where OpenAI models can be used are set to expand further. The announcement included plans to bring OpenAI models to Google Antigravity and Gemini Agent as well.

For companies in Korea running on Google Cloud, the purchasing mechanics and rollout timeline are worth tracking. The things to watch from here are when the general availability planned for within a few weeks actually begins, and how the coverage widens to include Antigravity and Gemini Agent.
