A 16-year-old who planned a hiking route with Anthropic’s Claude was rescued by helicopter from Crown Mountain near Vancouver, Canada, The Decoder reported. The teen was stranded below a steep rock face. Rescuers set up ropes and moved him to a safe spot.

How a hike turned into a rescue

North Shore Rescue, the agency that responded, said the hiker had left the regular trail and become stranded at the base of a cliff on the “Widowmaker” rock climbing section. Exactly where and how he strayed off the trail is unclear, the agency said.

Even after the helicopter arrived, it could not pick the hiker up right away. The cliff made it difficult for the helicopter to get close to him, the agency explained. Two rescuers were dropped above his position and rigged ropes, then moved the hiker to a point where the helicopter could hoist him out.

Local outlet North Shore News reported that the call came in just before 3:30 p.m. and the rescue wrapped up just before 6:30 p.m. From the initial call to completion, the operation took about three hours. The rescued hiker was reported to be 16 years old.

What went wrong with the AI-suggested route

The account that AI was used to prepare for the hike also came from the rescue team’s leadership. Paul Markey told local media that the teenager had used AI to plan his route up Crown Mountain. The New York Times reported that the tool the boy used was Claude. According to The Decoder, the teen had been looking for a new route to the summit with Claude and ended up at a steep rock face that required climbing gear.

The rescue agency said it was unclear where and how the hiker left the trail. The Decoder, by contrast, pointed to the AI-suggested route as the backdrop to the incident.

If you are going to use AI to plan a hike

Markey’s advice was not to use AI for route planning at all. He also said that if an AI gives you a route, you should not simply follow it, but check whether it actually makes sense. He mentioned Gaia GPS, CalTopo and AllTrails as resources to consult for maps and navigation.

According to The Decoder, the teen, Bryce, said he does not blame AI. Still, he said he will not use AI for route planning going forward. What Claude actually told him, and how that guidance connected to his movements on the mountain, has not yet been established.
